Teckie Techs with Kellie Turner
In this camp, students will explore the area of set design. We will look at a play and come up with a plan for a basic set design. We will focus on building a scale model of the set. The students will work in groups as they explore the creative process. This camp helps build the student’s creative skills and ability to work in a group setting to create a finished product.
Teaching Artist KELLIE TURNER is excited to be returning to Arts Smarts Summer program. She is multi-vocational professional, working as an artist, director, playwright, producer, and musician. She holds a B.A. degree in Theatre from Pepperdine University, a Master’s degree in Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in ministry from Drew University. Kellie has toured nationally and internationally as a vocalist and actor. She has had featured roles in The Wiz, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Modern Love, The Sopranos, and Broadway’s Showboat, and is currently working on a theatrical project that focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone entitled Birds Flyin’ High that was performed at the Ware recently. Kellie is excited to work with young aspiring artists, sharing a bit about life upon the wickedly wonderful stage.
Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA.
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts. And the camps are open to children of all abilities.
Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.
The staff is comprised of a team of professional teaching artists and Millersville University Arts Education students who have full clearance for working with children.
