Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: MUSIC Morning Session – Grades K-2

What does music look like? This summer, campers will learn how to draw melodies and express the way that music makes them feel – through art!

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

The 5-Minute Musical That Could
Gotta Sing, Gotta Dance! But Gotta Make It Snappy! Here, with both narrative and movement, campers will create and perform their own original mini-musical.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Week 1-Morning Session- Grades 3-5: THEATRE “Teckie Techs”

In this camp, students will explore the area of set design. We will look at a play and come up with a plan for a basic set design. We will focus on building a scale model of the set. The students will work in groups as they explore the creative process. This camp helps build the student’s creative skills and ability to work in a group setting to create a finished product.

Teaching Artist KELLIE TURNER is excited to be returning to Arts Smarts Summer program. She is multi-vocational professional, working as an artist, director, playwright, producer, and musician. She holds a B.A. degree in Theatre from Pepperdine University, a Master’s degree in Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in ministry from Drew University. Kellie has toured nationally and internationally as a vocalist and actor. She has had featured roles in The Wiz, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Modern Love, The Sopranos, and Broadway’s Showboat, and is currently working on a theatrical project that focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone entitled Birds Flyin’ High that was performed at the Ware recently.  Kellie is excited to work with young aspiring artists, sharing a bit about life upon the wickedly wonderful stage.

 

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities.

Week 2 – Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5: MUSIC “Let’s Read: Rhythm and Melody on the Page”

Let’s Read: Rhythm and Melody on the Page with Briana Shyver

We will learn to read basic melodies using a sound-to-symbol process. The students will sing a song used throughout the week and describe what they hear. We will discover what those sounds look like and learn how to read them!

Teaching Artist: BRIANA SHYVER is currently a junior studying at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for her Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She spends the majority of her time as a percussion instructor for the Penn Manor Marching Unit and working as a Freshman Peer Mentor and Tell School Tutor. Her blossoming career is well on its way as her passion for music is ever growing. Briana loves to express herself through the arts and is looking forward to seeing what the campers can create through music!

Unconventional Instruments
Music is for everyone, by everyone.  Instruments are played far and wide and come in many shapes and sizes.  This week campers will learn about some of the different instruments from around the world, and, learning that music can be made from just about anything, they will create their very own.  The campers will have a chance to create their own four beat patterns using items they find around the Ware!

Experiment Like An Artist
Here young artists will try out different art forms like collage and abstract expressionism.  They’ll learn to take creative risks and turn everyday materials into amazing artworks through hands-on activities and teamwork

3…2…1..BLAST OFF! Here camper-astronauts will journey into outer space, riding in rocket ships, exploring planets, and encountering friendly aliens! They’ll travel lightyears away each morning yet be back on earth to tell their stories before lunchtime.

Week 1-Morning Session- Grades K-2: THEATRE “Into the Jungle”

Into The Jungle with Dylan Kranch

Here, young explorers will boldly journey into a jubilant jungle of their own creation!   Using the actor’s tools of imagination, body and voice, campers will encounter the sights and sounds and various exotic creatures that inhabit a jungle environment.

Teaching Artist DYLAN KRANCH is so excited to return to Arts Smarts for his third year! A graduate of Millersville University, Dylan now teaches English at Manheim Township High School. As an actor, his career spans regional and college shows. Some of his favorite credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (Irene Ryan Nomination for Best Actor), Radium Girls, And Then There Were None, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Bye Bye Birdie. As a teaching artist, he has worked with the Millersville University Storytelling Experience (M.U.S.E.), teaching the Neighborhood Bridges Curriculum developed by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Dylan is currently going into his third year as an assistant director for the M-Uth Theatre Program at the Ware Center. Dylan is so excited that he gets to make a career out of his two passions, theatre and teaching. He would like to share with our young minds the following quote: “The things that make you different are the things that make you, you.”- Piglet

Week 2 – Afternoon Session – Grades K-2: MUSIC “Song Writing “

Song Writing with Jessica Burdett

Writing songs can help us to develop self-expression, our creativity, and an ear for the elements of music. It’s a chance to explore rhythm and experiment with rhyme, and to practice recognizing patterns.  It can even help us reflect a bit on our lives, while having lots of fun!  Participants in this camp will write their own lyrics and melody to create a song to share with the other Arts Smarts campers at the end of the week! 

Teaching Artist: JESSICA BURDETT grew up in Pennsylvania, graduating from Millersville University with a BSE in Music Education and a Sub-Baccalaureate in Kodaly Music Studies. She is a middle school and elementary school music teacher in Philadelphia PA. She loves singing and playing guitar. Building up musical skills and creativity in every student is her passion.

Sshhhhhh! …Silent Shorts
Before there were talking movies, there were silent movies that made actors like Charlie Chaplin a star in the 1920’s. This camp will pay homage to the long – gone era of silent movies. Campers will learn some of the history of silent films while creating a group project that will include writing and filming a silent movie short for presentation at the end of the week. This camp will build group skills, storytelling through a silent medium, and provide a bit of history for campers interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts. 

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided.
