Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: THEATRE Afternoon Session – Grades K-2

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – A Play Within a Play!
All the world’s a stage, and all the campers merely players! Here, we offer a basic introduction to the works of William Shakespeare designed specifically for our youngest campers using his humorous story of love, fairies, mistaken identity and magic – A Midsummer Night’s Dream – as its basis. Campers will perform a short, silly, modernized version of a scene from this classic comedy.  

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 2: DANCE Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5

Pointe Perfection
Campers will prance their way into the wonderful world of Ballet by learning about its many periods, while they create their own story told as an elegant and fun choreographed dance for an end of the week performance.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Week 2-Morning Session- Grades K-2: THEATRE “Treasure Island” – FULL

The classic story of Treasure Island will serve as a jumping-off place for this swashbuckling camp in which participants will experience the adventurous tale of pirates, buried treasure, and epic sailing ships! Using their imaginations, voices and bodies, campers will embody classic characters and bring their valiant tale vividly to life!

Teaching Artist DYLAN KRANCH is so excited to return to Arts Smarts for his third year! A graduate of Millersville University, Dylan now teaches English at Manheim Township High School. As an actor, his career spans regional and college shows. Some of his favorite credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (Irene Ryan Nomination for Best Actor), Radium Girls, And Then There Were None, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Bye Bye Birdie. As a teaching artist, he has worked with the Millersville University Storytelling Experience (M.U.S.E.), teaching the Neighborhood Bridges Curriculum developed by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Dylan is currently going into his third year as an assistant director for the M-Uth Theatre Program at the Ware Center. Dylan is so excited that he gets to make a career out of his two passions, theatre and teaching. He would like to share with our young minds the following quote: “The things that make you different are the things that make you, you.”- Piglet

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities. 

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both!  (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Art Explorers
Explore the world of art at our camp designed for 3rd – 5th graders!  From sculpting with everyday objects to creating expressive paintings, each day offers hands-on activities to spark creativity and imagination in a fun and supportive environment.

Teaching Artist CRISTINA VIRMANI, a 2017 graduate of Millersville University, is a multifaceted artist and educator. With seven years of enriching experience as an art teacher within the Conestoga Valley School District, she has helped nurtured young talents, fostering creativity and self-expression in her students. Cristina’s journey is anchored by a BFA in Painting, a testament to her dedication to the craft and mastery of visual storytelling. Beyond the classroom, she will be entering her 8th summer at Arts Smarts, where she continues to inspire and be inspired by the vibrant creative community of Lancaster.

Sculpture
This camp is all about 3D works of art. Our campers will learn about famous sculptures and brainstorm ideas of their own, exploring origami and making original sculptures from all sorts of materials.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. Teaching Artist BETHANY MILLER
graduated from Millersville University in 2023 with a BSE in Art with a concentration in painting. Her plan is to teach art at the elementary school level and to continue creating works of her own. With teaching experience in Manheim Township and Lower Dauphin, Bethany loves spreading the joy and learning that comes from creating. She is very glad to be able to do so for another summer of ARTS SMARTS.

This camp will focus on that Latin dance favorite – the cha-cha, its steps, styling, and technique. Turn, dip, slide, and have a ballroom ball while developing a fabuloso cha-cha routine for the closing day presentation!

Birthed in the Dominican Republic, but now wildly popular all around the world, campers here will have a blast with Bachata Dance. Learning its steps, styling, and technique, they will dance their way to a week’s end rousing performance.

Week 1-Morning Session – Grades 3-5: MUSIC “Music from Around the World”

Music from Around the World with Briana Shyver

Campers here will explore different cultures and their music through song and critical listening! We will describe what we hear in cultural music and learn about the many ways it is made. We will also learn about instruments from around the world – and make our own! 

Teaching Artist: BRIANA SHYVER is currently a junior studying at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for her Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She spends the majority of her time as a percussion instructor for the Penn Manor Marching Unit and working as a Freshman Peer Mentor and Tell School Tutor. Her blossoming career is well on its way as her passion for music is ever growing. Briana loves to express herself through the arts and is looking forward to seeing what the campers can create through music!

Week 2 – Morning Session- Grades 3-5: VISUAL ART “Me, Myself and I!” – FULL

Me, Myself, and I! with Blake Showers

Here, we will discover different ways of making self-portraits. We will use non-conventional tools ranging from sponges to brooms to coffee – and more!  We’ll find inspiration in the work of Jackson Pollock, Helen Frankenthaler, Jason Revok, and Evan Robarts, who are a few of the artists that work with these innovative techniques.

Teaching Artist BLAKE SHOWERS is an illustrator/mangaka from Birmingham, Alabama. His main concentration in art is character design and world-building. He is influenced by Hip Hop, Japanese culture, and the Black experience. Blake is a senior at Millersville University. He will be graduating Spring of 2024 with a BSE in Art Education. Blake aspires to work in the animation industry as a development executive. He hopes to use his illustration experience to guide students to further their passions in art.
