Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: THEATRE Morning Session – Grades 3-5

Sappy Soaps
In this camp, All My Children meets Young and the Restless in the Days of Our Lives. Campers will work together to create their own overly dramatic serial to present onstage.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

Artists Inspire
This week campers will learn about such artists as Keith Haring, Ed Emberley, Henri Matisse and more, and use their artwork to inspire their own that will be exhibited on Friday.

Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Week 1-Morning Session- Grades K-2: VISUAL ART “Abstract Curiosity” FULL

Abstract Curiosity with Bethany Miller

Campers here will work abstractly with paint and watercolor to create fun and interesting textures. They will then be encouraged to find images within the marks they have created, and once they do, they will further explore and build upon their ideas. This camp asks: “What surprises do you think you’ll find in your artwork?”

Teaching Artist: Bethany Miller graduated from Millersville University in 2023 with a BSE in art and a BFA with a concentration in painting, and recently her first show in Millersville. Miller plans to teach art at the elementary level and continue creating works of her own. With teaching experience at Manheim Township and Lower Dauphin, Bethany loves spreading the joy and learning that comes from creating.

 

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities.

Week 2 – Afternoon Session – Grades K-2: THEATRE “Intro to Improv!”

Intro to Improv! with Dylan Kranch

In this camp, budding young performers will discover the fundamentals of improvisational theatre! Exploring aspects of mime, gibberish, character, and thinking on your feet, campers will gain important knowledge that every great actor needs! This camp will be fun, exciting, and especially unpredictable!

Teaching Artist DYLAN KRANCH is so excited to return to Arts Smarts for his third year! A graduate of Millersville University, Dylan now teaches English at Manheim Township High School. As an actor, his career spans regional and college shows. Some of his favorite credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (Irene Ryan Nomination for Best Actor), Radium Girls, And Then There Were None, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Bye Bye Birdie. As a teaching artist, he has worked with the Millersville University Storytelling Experience (M.U.S.E.), teaching the Neighborhood Bridges Curriculum developed by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Dylan is currently going into his third year as an assistant director for the M-Uth Theatre Program at the Ware Center. Dylan is so excited that he gets to make a career out of his two passions, theatre and teaching. He would like to share with our young minds the following quote: “The things that make you different are the things that make you, you.”- Piglet

Embark on a week-long journey of artistic perception, where campers explore observation and expression in art through engaging activities and creative challenges, culminating in a deeper understanding of artistic vision and emotive storytelling.

Teaching Artist CRISTINA VIRMANI, a 2017 graduate of Millersville University, is a multifaceted artist and educator. With seven years of enriching experience as an art teacher within the Conestoga Valley School District, she has helped nurtured young talents, fostering creativity and self-expression in her students. Cristina’s journey is anchored by a BFA in Painting, a testament to her dedication to the craft and mastery of visual storytelling. Beyond the classroom, she will be entering her 8th summer at Arts Smarts, where she continues to inspire and be inspired by the vibrant creative community of Lancaster.

In this camp, we will explore and play with color – color mixing, analogous colors, complimentary colors, the whole rainbow! An art show of the camper’s works will end this colorful week.

Here campers will discover ways of making the slower side of contemporary dance captivatingly fun by exploring different styles and devising an original story and dance to perform at week’s end.

Week 1-Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5: MUSIC “Music on the Move!”

Music on the Move!with Briana Shyver

Let loose and move to some of your favorite popular songs! During this session, we will be dancing to songs the students know and love. We will also learn how to play games through song and dance. Get your body moving and your voice singing beautifully!

Teaching Artist: BRIANA SHYVER is currently a junior studying at Millersville University of Pennsylvania for her Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She spends the majority of her time as a percussion instructor for the Penn Manor Marching Unit and working as a Freshman Peer Mentor and Tell School Tutor. Her blossoming career is well on its way as her passion for music is ever growing. Briana loves to express herself through the arts and is looking forward to seeing what the campers can create through music!

Week 2 – Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5: VISUAL ART “Character Design 101” – FULL

Character Design 101 with Blake Showers

In this camp, we will be making up our own characters and character model sheets! The campers will get to analyze characters that they know and dissect what makes them unique. We will also use the methods and techniques used in the animation industry to create our characters!  Campers will look into artists such as Genndy Tartakovsky, Rebecca Sugar, Zharia Rhan, and Ian Jones-Quartey. 

Teaching Artist BLAKE SHOWERS is an illustrator/mangaka from Birmingham, Alabama. His main concentration in art is character design and world-building. He is influenced by Hip Hop, Japanese culture, and the Black experience. Blake is a senior at Millersville University. He will be graduating Spring of 2024 with a BSE in Art Education. Blake aspires to work in the animation industry as a development executive. He hopes to use his illustration experience to guide students to further their passions in art.
