Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: DANCE Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5

Shake, Sparkle, & Shine
In this camp, we will dive into and unlock our campers cheery sides through the interesting style of pom dance. We will learn different forms when dancing in groups, and as a team create a choreographed routine to put together a show-stopping performance by the end of the week.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

Make My Stage
This is an opportunity for campers to explore theatrical design and create different theatre staging forms including theatre-in-the-round, proscenium, and thrust stages.  

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Week 2-Morning Session- Grades K-2: MUSIC “Jazz Music and Improvisation”

Jazz Music and Improvisation with Jessica Burdett

Here is an exploration of Jazz music, not only one of America’s great cultural gifts to the world, but a genre of song so lively and fun that it will truly delight every young person!  Students will learn about the greats of jazz history, sing jazz standards, and learn to improvise their own jazz solos! 

Teaching Artist: JESSICA BURDETT grew up in Pennsylvania, graduating from Millersville University with a BSE in Music Education and a Sub-Baccalaureate in Kodaly Music Studies. She is a middle school and elementary school music teacher in Philadelphia PA. She loves singing and playing guitar. Building up musical skills and creativity in every student is her passion.

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities.

The Comics Live
Have you ever wondered what it would be like for your favorite comic strip to transfer from a book or newspaper to the stage? Well in this camp, campers will do just that by working in groups to write, draw up, and perform a short comic strip complete with text bubbles and a narrator. This process helps the student build their creative acting skills, group skills, writing and visual arts skills culminating in an end-of-the-week mini-performance.

Teaching Artist KELLIE TURNER is excited to once again be part of the Arts Smarts Summer program. She is multi-vocational professional, working as an artist, director, playwright, producer, musician, and clergy member. She holds a B.A. degree in Theatre from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and a doctoral degree from Drew University. Kellie has toured nationally and internationally as a vocalist and actor. She has had featured roles in The Wiz, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Modern Love, The Sopranos, and Broadway’s Showboat, and is currently developing on a theatrical project that focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone as well as directing a production of Chicken & Biscuits at EPAC. Kellie is excited to work with young aspiring artists, sharing a bit about life upon the wickedly wonderful stage.

Composition Collaboration
Calling all singers, songwriters, and instrumentalists!  This week, campers will discover the art of creating music with lyrics, accompaniment, and collaboration by working together to make their very own camp song.  We will explore different genres of music through stories, singing, and play!

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Teaching Artist: BRIANA SHYVER is currently a senior studying at Millersville University for her Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She spends the majority of her time as a percussion instructor for the Penn Manor Marching Unit and working as a Freshman Peer Mentor and Tell School of Music tutor. Her blossoming career is well on its way as her passion for music is ever growing. Briana loves to express herself through the arts and is looking forward to another summer of seeing what her campers can crate through music!

There’s no business like news business! Campers, here, will build their own news station with anchors, sportscasters, weather reporters, etc., and at the end of the week present a live onstage “brevity-broadcast.”

Exploring Plays: Beauty and the Beast!
In this camp, we will explore the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. Campers will learn lines, blocking, choreography, make props and costumes, and perform their own original version of this timeless magical story.

Week 2-Morning Session – Grades 3-5: THEATRE “Mime Your Bizness”

Mime Your Bizness with Kellie Turner

Mime is an expressive form of theater that uses movement, gesture, and facial expressions to convey emotions and tell stories without speaking. In this camp, students can learn the basics of this art form, including body control, illusion, and pantomime. Campers will learn technique as they work in groups. The overall objective of this camp is to help students explore their creativity and develop their skills in a non-verbal mode of expression that emphasizes physicality, gesture, and movement.

Exploring Stories: Peter Pan
Campers here will explore the magical world of Pirates, Fairies, and Lost Boys from J.M. Barrie’s enthralling tale of Peter Pan.  They will use elements of the actor’s tool box (including voice, body, imagination, and creativity) to bring this classic tale to life.  Additionally, campers will explore costume, prop, set design, and special effects used to take this story from the page to the stage.  At the end of the week, they will perform and abridged/devised version for family and friends.

Teaching Artist DYLAN KRANCH
is so excited to return to Arts Smarts for his 4th year! A graduate of Millersville University, Dylan now teaches English and Drama at Manheim Township High School. As an actor, his career spans regional, and college shows. Some of his favorite credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (Irene Ryan Nomination for Best Actor), Radium Girls, And Then There Were None, Jesus Christ Superstar, Bye Bye Birdie. As a teaching artist, he has worked with the Millersville University Storytelling Experience (M.U.S.E.), teaching the Neighborhood Bridges Curriculum developed by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Dylan is currently going into his fifth year as an assistant director for the M-Uth Theatre Program at the Ware Center. Dylan is currently enrolled in his master’s degree program at Southeastern Oklahoma State University pursuing a master’s degree in Theater Education. Dylan is so excited that he gets to make a career out of his two passions, theater and teaching. He would like to share with his young mind the following quote: “The moment you doubt whether you can fly, you cease forever to be able to do it.” – Peter Pan, J.M. Barrie.

In this camp, the young players will explore and perform ancient legends from around the world. Campers will be exposed to a diverse expanse of myths and tales from countries such as Japan, Somalia, Greece, and Peru.   They will use their bodies, voices, imaginations and creativity to make these fascinating stories come to life.
