Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: DANCE Morning Session – Grades K-2

Hip Hop Happy
Since its very start, Hip Hop dance has made a huge impact on our world. In this camp, we will work on basic Hip Hop steps, styling, and technique. Throughout the week we will have fun moving through this energetic genre and rehearsing a poppin’ Hip Hop routine to present at the Friday showcase!

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

All That Jazz
Centered around improvisation and creativity, Jazz dance is showy fun. Here campers will play with its four basic elements  – form, style, rhythm, and energy – as they prepare to perform their own original Jazz routine on Friday.

Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. Week 1-Afternoon Session- Grades K-2: MUSIC “Sing! Sing! Sing!”

Sing! Sing! Sing! with Jessica Burdett

This camp is for children who love to sing! We will learn new songs to play games with, to dance to, and to perform for each other and for everyone else at Arts Smarts at week’s end, all the while learning vocal fundamentals, practicing vocal expression skills, and building the connection between body and voice!

Teaching Artist: JESSICA BURDETT grew up in Pennsylvania, graduating from Millersville University with a BSE in Music Education and a Sub-Baccalaureate in Kodaly Music Studies. She is a middle school and elementary school music teacher in Philadelphia PA. She loves singing and playing guitar. Building up musical skills and creativity in every student is her passion.

 

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities.

Week 2 – Afternoon Session – Grades K-2: VISUAL ART “Who Am I?” Portrait – FULL

Campers will learn and discuss different ways to express themselves visually by looking at famous artists’ self-portraits. Once they gather their favorite qualities about themselves, they will make their own self-portraits.

Teaching Artist: Bethany Miller graduated from Millersville University in 2023 with a BSE in art and a BFA with a concentration in painting, and recently her first show in Millersville. Miller plans to teach art at the elementary level and continue creating works of her own. With teaching experience at Manheim Township and Lower Dauphin, Bethany loves spreading the joy and learning that comes from creating.

Lift Your Voice!
Here campers will become a chorus!  Through musical games, vocal exercises, solfege, experimenting with harmonies, reading music, and more, we will learn and sing music throughout the week, all while learning more about our voices and how to put on a good show.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. Teaching Artist JULIA KAMANDA, happily returning to ARTS SMARTS after a summer in Africa, is the owner and creative director for the Young Musician Academy, a contemporary music mentoring program for musicians ages 7-19. She loves to write songs, go hiking with her guitar, and travel to cool places around the world. She has two kids going into 6th and 8th grade and a husband who has won awards for his original films!

Here campers will explore the world of hip-hop through different styles, and learn choreographed dance, as well as discovering ways to make this dance form all the more fun and exciting!  At the end of the week, campers will present their won routine dance.

Seeing How Artists See (Seeing Like an Artist)
Campers here embark on a week-long journey of artistic perception, where they explore observation and expression in art through engaging activities and creative challenges, culminating in a deeper understanding of artistic vision and emotive storytelling.

Week 1-Afternoon Session- Grades 3-5: THEATRE ” To Beeee or Knot 2 B”

To Beeee or Knot 2 B with Kellie Turner

Here, campers get an overview of some of the pioneers of Theatre – particularly Billy Shakespeare, his life and work. Participants will work on short scenes as they develop the use of verse and theme. The focus will be on performance. This process helps the campers build their classical acting skills while learning about the written work of the playwright, offering an end-of-the-week presentation.

 Teaching Artist KELLIE TURNER is excited to be returning to Arts Smarts Summer program. She is multi-vocational professional, working as an artist, director, playwright, producer, and musician. She holds a B.A. degree in Theatre from Pepperdine University, a Master’s degree in Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary and a doctoral degree in ministry from Drew University. Kellie has toured nationally and internationally as a vocalist and actor. She has had featured roles in The Wiz, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Modern Love, The Sopranos, and Broadway’s Showboat, and is currently working on a theatrical project that focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone entitled Birds Flyin’ High that was performed at the Ware recently.  Kellie is excited to work with young aspiring artists, sharing a bit about life upon the wickedly wonderful stage.

World Music Exploration
This camp is all about traveling in search of the best music from around the globe!  We will use our imaginations and travel to far-off places to encounter the music and instrument of those locales including Peru, Egypt, Mexico, and China.  We will then head back to the lab where we will create the instruments we discovered each day.

The Tortoise & The Hare
It’s all about tempo!  This camp will begin with a reading of the fable The Tortoise & The Hare.  As the week progresses, we will explore the many ways that we can move like the tortoise and the hare.  We will play instruments at varying tempos, listen to music that is fast like a hare and slow like a tortoise, and play song games that are all about the beat!

Teaching Artist: BRIANA SHYVER
is currently a senior studying at Millersville University for her Bachelor of Science in Music Education. She spends the majority of her time as a percussion instructor for the Penn Manor Marching Unit and working as a Freshman Peer Mentor and Tell School of Music tutor. Her blossoming career is well on its way as her passion for music is ever growing. Briana loves to express herself through the arts and is looking forward to another summer of seeing what her campers can crate through music!
