ORIGINS/Freemind Freestyle

Founded by Los Angeles natives and co-artistic directors, Jackie “Miss Funk” Lopez and Leigh “Breeze-Lee” Foaad, Versa-Style Dance Company was created to promote, empower, and celebrate the artistry of Hip Hop and street dance culture and harness its exhilarating energy for the concert stage. The company’s latest full-length work, Freemind Freestyle, explores the depths of improvisational dance, diving into the concept of freedom from all angles: the personal, political, physical, and the spiritual. How do we experience freedom? What contains us, oppresses us? What allows us to break free? Freemind Freestyle explores these questions from both the evolutionary and ancestral lens, blending Hip Hop, Popping, Krump, and House dance movement that pays homage to the Afro-Latin roots of Hip Hop dance culture from which we draw our revolutionary power.

Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana: Quinto Elemento

A rousing night of flamenco—a fiery form of traditional Spanish dance—performed to the sounds of Spanish guitar!

Through the bulería, a festive style of flamenco, choreographer Patricia Guerrero explores the fifth element—ether—which makes up the space around us. Set to original music by composer Francis Gomez and performed by phenomenal live musicians, Quinto Elemento draws on traditional flamenco structure and daringly deconstructs its rules, breathing life into the invisible fifth element.

>> Flamenco Lecture: Dr. Ana Börger-Greco, former professor of Spanish at Millersville University and widow of flamenco artist Jose Greco, will give a talk at 6:30 p.m. in the Salon (2nd floor of the Ware Center) about the basis of traditional flamenco that the show is modernizing.

Ananta, The Eternal

Guggenheim Fellow and Doris Duke Award recipient Aparna Ramaswamy’s newest work – Ananta, The Eternal – weaves together threads of body, memory, desire, and devotion. Sisters and acclaimed Bharatanatyam dancers/choreographers Aparna Ramaswamy and Ashwini Ramaswamy come together for their first duet performance accompanied by extraordinary live musicians from Chennai, India.

Ananta describes the eternal relationship between the deity and the devotee. The experience of beholding the image of a deity with one’s own eyes is a central act of worship and charged with meaning – it is reciprocal and electric. The sacred is present in this auspicious moment; through the meeting of the eyes, one gains the grace of the divine.

DRUM TAO – 30th Anniversary – SOLD OUT

DRUM TAO‘s stage is created through phenomenal performances and expressions consisting of incomparable “Wadaiko-drums” and the beautiful melody of Japanese flutes and harps. It is the “Japanese Entertainment” for a new generation that completely surpasses expectations.

In February 2016, their Off-Broadway shows in New York were completely sold out! It was featured in the weekly American magazine, Newsweek stating “The highly acclaimed debut of DRUM TAO in Broadway will represent not only Japanese entertainment but Japan itself”.

Their production “MANGEKYO” started in Tokyo in 2017 when they made their major recording debut from UNIVERSAL MUSIC as a compilation of their work for 25 years, which ranked as one of the top three in the iTunes World Album Ranking in five different countries.

In 2018, they performed in the opening ceremony of “Japonisms 2018” in Paris, France. They also costarred with the Bolshoi Ballet as the opening act of “Japan Year in Russia” held at The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Russia, in front of the head of each country.

They were awarded “Outstanding Cultural Contribution” from Oita prefecture, “Culture Creators Award” from Taketa city in Oita prefecture, and “The 6th Japan Tourism Agency Commissioner Award” and “Minister for Internal Affairs and Communications Award” from the Japanese government.

This very special year, they are celebrating their 30th Anniversary with a rare stop in central Pennsylvania at the Winter Center – don’t miss it!

BYU-Idaho Dance Alliance

Designed to provide a near-professional experience, BYU-Idaho’s Dance Alliance performs a variety of styles of dance (ballet, ballroom, contemporary, hip-hop, jazz, tap, and world), woven together to delight the senses and inspire the soul, with music, costumes, and choreography that are wholesome and uplifting. Dance Alliance has toured throughout the United States and many countries around the world. All proceeds from the performance will benefit Church World Services of Lancaster. The show is approximately 2 hours in length with no intermission. Children 2 and younger are admitted free but must accompany an adult and be seated on their lap during the performance.

For more than 30 years, Church World Service of Lancaster has welcomed thousands of new neighbors from around the world to our beautiful country. Through partnerships with faith groups, organizations and individuals, they empower our newest neighbors to build new lives in peace and security, providing up to 5 years of service and support.
