Wild in the Shadows explores nature, animal forms, and our connection to our lost human instinct through the intricate wood sculptures of Lancaster County artist Rob Homan.

Homan elevates the craft of woodcarving to fine art sculpture, transforming locally sourced wood slabs into bold, graphic works inspired by animals, flowers, trees, and the natural environment. Each sculpture is painstakingly hand-carved with a series of small gouges, creating layers of texture and depth that interact with light and shadow. Vibrant acrylic colors bring the carved surfaces to life, while the shadows within each carving reveal details that become more apparent as viewers move closer.

Homan’s sculptures can take hundreds of hours to complete, reflecting an extraordinary level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. His work draws inspiration from nature, architecture, woodworking, and traditional folk art, including Polish traditions such as Wycinanki and Pysanky.

About the Artist

A Lancaster County native, Rob Homan developed his passion for woodworking while exploring the forests and working in his father’s woodshop. After earning an architecture degree from Temple University and working in design/build firms in Philadelphia and Los Angeles, Homan became a creative director at TAIT, where he focuses on large-scale sculptural installations around the world.

His lifelong connection to woodworking continues through his highly detailed hand-carved wood sculptures, which combine traditional craftsmanship with contemporary graphic design and vibrant color.
