Arts Smarts 2025 – Week 1: VISUAL ART Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5

Art Explorers
Explore the world of art from sculpting with everyday objects to creating expressive paintings, each day offering hands-on activities to spark creativity and imagination in a fun and supportive environment.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. On Fridays of both weeks, there are morning and afternoon performance showcases and art exhibits for families and friends featuring the campers’ work of each week. Drop-off and pick-up at the Ware Center is supervised by the staff.

Registration deadline is May 16, 2025.

Art Stories
Join our Story Illustrations Art Camp for a week of creative exploration! Campers will craft characters, set scenes, and illustrate narratives through hands-on activities, workshops, and a final showcase of their imaginative creations.

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Both mornings and afternoons feature a “Common Hour” in which all campers join together for a large group creative multi-disciplinary activity. Week 1-Afternoon Session- Grades K-2: THEATRE “Making a Play”

Making A Play with Dylan Kranch

Campers here will examine what it takes to make a play. Each day, we will delve into a different aspect of production and performance. Through escapades in lighting, sound, set, props, acting and more, participants will get a fun and first-hand overview of the playmaking process!

Teaching Artist DYLAN KRANCH is so excited to return to Arts Smarts for his third year! A graduate of Millersville University, Dylan now teaches English at Manheim Township High School. As an actor, his career spans regional and college shows. Some of his favorite credits include Dancing at Lughnasa (Irene Ryan Nomination for Best Actor), Radium Girls, And Then There Were None, Jesus Christ Superstar, and Bye Bye Birdie. As a teaching artist, he has worked with the Millersville University Storytelling Experience (M.U.S.E.), teaching the Neighborhood Bridges Curriculum developed by The Children’s Theatre Company in Minneapolis. Dylan is currently going into his third year as an assistant director for the M-Uth Theatre Program at the Ware Center. Dylan is so excited that he gets to make a career out of his two passions, theatre and teaching. He would like to share with our young minds the following quote: “The things that make you different are the things that make you, you.”- Piglet

Registration is now open for ARTS SMARTS Camps, offered through The Arts at Millersville University at the Ware Center, in downtown Lancaster. For two weeks starting June 19 and June 26, Arts at MU will present 12 unique camps per each week in morning and afternoon sessions for young campers in Music, Theatre or Visual Arts. The Ware Center is located at 42 N Prince Street, Lancaster, PA. 
 
These camps have been created especially for children in two grade-level ranges: (rising) Kindergarten–Grade 2 and (rising) Grades 3-5. Each camp is different, and there are morning and afternoon options for both grade-level ranges and in all three disciplines – Music, Theatre, and/or Visual Arts.  And the camps are open to children of all abilities.

Cosplay: Who Wears What?
In this camp, students will explore how stories come together through what the characters on stage wear.  Campers will look at different characters either from stage or film and design costumes for them to wear. Campers will have the opportunity to dress as their character as well as present drawings and how they came about their creative process. This process helps build the student’s creativity as well as support the ability to work in a group setting. At the end of the week, campers will present their costume design creations.

Teaching Artist KELLIE TURNER is excited to once again be part of the Arts Smarts Summer program. She is multi-vocational professional, working as an artist, director, playwright, producer, musician, and clergy member. She holds a B.A. degree in Theatre from Pepperdine University, a master’s degree in Divinity from Lancaster Theological Seminary, and a doctoral degree from Drew University. Kellie has toured nationally and internationally as a vocalist and actor. She has had featured roles in The Wiz, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, Modern Love, The Sopranos, and Broadway’s Showboat, and is currently developing on a theatrical project that focuses on the life and music of Nina Simone as well as directing a production of Chicken & Biscuits at EPAC. Kellie is excited to work with young aspiring artists, sharing a bit about life upon the wickedly wonderful stage.

5,6,7,8: A Chorus Line
Dance 10 looks amazing!!!!! In this camp, students will get the opportunity to explore one aspect of being a triple threat on the stage: movement. Campers will engage in learning different movement combinations from Broadway shows. Campers will also have the opportunity to choreograph a short dance routine of their own for presentation at the end of the week. This camp will encourage the camper to explore their inner Bob Fosse, Jerome Robbins, or Susan Stroman through movement.  

Campers can register for morning sessions from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, afternoon sessions from 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM, or both! (For those staying all day, there is a supervised lunch period. Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Welcome campers to printmaking week, hands-on projects in everything from stamps to monoprints, with a closing showcase of original print creations.

Here campers will create arts that looks and even feels good! They will make string painting, create their own batiks, do weaving, and more – all to be displayed in a final day art exhibit.

Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided. Week 1-Afternoon Session – Grades 3-5: VISUAL ART “Make Some Noise!”

Make Some Noise! with Blake Showers

This is a fun exploration of the many ways we can use sound (including the sound of words) to make art! We will talk about artists such as Christine Sun Kim and Samson Young to see how they approach their highly original work. Campers will learn to interpret sounds thru various art mediums.

Teaching Artist BLAKE SHOWERS is an illustrator/mangaka from Birmingham, Alabama. His main concentration in art is character design and world-building. He is influenced by Hip Hop, Japanese culture, and the Black experience. Blake is a senior at Millersville University. He will be graduating Spring of 2024 with a BSE in Art Education. Blake aspires to work in the animation industry as a development executive. He hopes to use his illustration experience to guide students to further their passions in art.

Teaching Artist CRISTINA VIRMANI, a 2017 graduate of Millersville University, is a multifaceted artist and educator. With seven years of enriching experience as an art teacher within the Conestoga Valley School District, she has helped nurtured young talents, fostering creativity and self-expression in her students. Cristina’s journey is anchored by a BFA in Painting, a testament to her dedication to the craft and mastery of visual storytelling.  Beyond the classroom, she will be entering her 8th summer at Arts Smarts, where she continues to inspire and be inspired by the vibrant creative community of Lancaster.

Medieval Times
Here we will travel back into the past to explore the world of kings and queens, knights and jesters, and courtly court musicians. Imagining ourselves back in the Middle Ages, we will immerse ourselves in the lives of these fascinating people. Campers will use their minds, bodies, and voices to bring these characters to life and explore what life was like in Medieval Times!

Lunches must be brought to camp and will be refrigerated.) Morning and afternoon snacks are provided.
