Flamenco de Cámara
Since its inception, the language of flamenco has been expanding to include non-traditional instruments, eventually including instruments such as the saxophone, harmonica, or bass. Within these new formulas, it seemed unthinkable to overlook one of the principal instruments of the orchestral tradition: the violin. Virtuosic, mystical, and emotive, the violin has stood as the flagbearer of canonical and academic music.
In Pablo Giménez Spanish Ensemble’s production Flamenco de Cámara (Chamber Flamenco) a quartet combines the essence of flamenco with the work of one of the most important composers and violinists of the European Romanticism movement, Eugène Ysaÿe.
The sentimental, tragic, and melancholic music typical of Romanticism is tempered by the flamenco tradition, contrasting with flamenco’s marked rhythms. Pablo Gimenez strums austere flamenco melodies on his guitar, while violinist Javier Claudio exalts this tradition with Ysaÿe’s compositions. The quartet is completed by cellist Álvaro Peregrina and dancer Miguel Ángel Rodriguez, contributing warmth and resonance to the music.
Giménez’s style focuses on a flamenco language that is usurped by a chamber music concept for violin and cello, but as the Andalusian musical tradition dictates, inseparable from the guitar and percussive dance.

Arts at Millersville University We The People First Friday, in partnership with Church World Service and the Pennsylvania Migrant Education Program, will present “Acts of Welcome” the annual celebration of the artistry of Lancaster’s treasured refugee and immigrant communities, featuring performers from different cultures performing in a variety of genres.
The performances, emceed by Rachel Helwig of Church World Services, will take place at 6:30 P.M. in Steinman Hall. Artists include Ukrainian actress, singer and producer Anna Koziar who will sing, recite verse for a Ukrainian author, and provide a presentation about a fund she has created called the “Ukrainian Performing Arts Fund”. Additional performers include a Nepali youth dance troupe under the direction of Dilli Chapagain, singer and Columbian immigrant Ramiro Velasco, and Semukondo Olivier from the People’s Republic of Congo who will be performing two Afro-inspired songs.
An opening reception for an exhibit of paintings by Ayad Kalbosh, an artist who recently relocated to Lancaster from Iraq, will be held in the Regitz Gallery from 6-8 P.M. The exhibit will remain on display through May 26, 2023.
Jazz Ensembles: Jazz at the ‘Ville
Featuring the Jazz Lab Band under the direction of Dr. Joe Cernuto and the Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Ryan Kauffman.

Christy Banks and Manor Winds
A Lancaster-based ensemble, Manor Winds is comprised of five musicians who come together to rehearse in a historic farmhouse on Manor Street in Lancaster, PA. Since their formation in the Spring of 2016, they have given over 50 performances throughout the southeastern Pennsylvania region. At home in traditional and non-traditional settings, Manor Winds strives for professional performances of both standard and modern wind quintet repertoire. Built upon friendships developed in the freelancing community, Marissa, Lauren, Christy, Anne, and Robin believe that quality chamber music should be readily available to the region’s diverse population. Manor Winds wishes to share their love of music and collaboration with their surrounding community and can be seen performing throughout southeastern Pennsylvania.
Christy Banks, Clarinet
Christy Banks, Associate Professor of Clarinet and Assistant Chair of the Music Department at Millersville University of Pennsylvania, has appeared as a soloist/recitalist throughout the US as well as in Austria, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany, Iceland, Italy, and New Zealand. Passionate about new music, Banks is a member of NakedEye Ensemble and Spatial Forces Duo. Additional affiliations include Lincoln’s Symphony Orchestra, Pennsylvania Philharmonic, Allegro Orchestra Lancaster, King Street Big Band, and Manor Woodwind Quintet. She holds degrees from the University of Nebraska Lincoln and the Florida State University.
Harlem Quartet – McIlwaine Concert
New York-based Harlem Quartet (Ilmar Gavilán and Melissa White, violins; Jaime Amado, viola; Felix Umansky, cello) has been praised for its “panache” by The New York Times and hailed for “bringing a new attitude to classical music, one that is fresh, bracing and intelligent” in the Cincinnati Enquirer.
Since its public debut at Carnegie Hall, the ensemble has thrilled audiences and students in 47 states as well as in the U.K., France, Belgium, Brazil, Panama, Canada, Venezuela, Japan, Ethiopia, and South Africa. Harlem Quartet’s programming combines standard string quartet literature with jazz, Latin, and contemporary works.

CelloGayageum
CelloGayageum is a unique intercultural musical duo consisting of cellist Sol Daniel Kim and Gayageum player Dayoung Yoon. The idea to create this duo came from their visit to the “Pavillon of Unification” in Berlin, a city shaped by a tragic history of war, division, and reunion. By seamlessly blending the musical cultures and instruments of the cello and Gayageum, they create a harmonious symbiosis in both sound and style.
Since their formation in 2016, CelloGayageum has received recognition and awards including the Soorim Culture Prize, as well as a grant from the Seoul Foundation of Arts and Culture to produce their first album, South Wave, North Wind. In 2020, they were named “Artist of the Year” by the Jeongdong Theater in Seoul.
In addition to their musical pursuits, CelloGayageum is also committed to sharing their love of traditional South Korean music with a wider audience. They have appeared on popular Korean primetime TV shows such as KBS, JTBC, and MBN, and have toured in Asia, including Japan and Turkey, as well as throughout Europe in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Italy, and Spain.
On this tour, CelloGayageum will present original compositions from their new album titled “2.0”. The music is based on Korean traditional music and classical chamber music, with a hint of jazz, bluegrass, and flamenco. CelloGayageum is also keen on community engagement programs such as workshops and masterclasses for both general audiences and professional musicians. The programs will share general knowledge of Korean traditional music and instruments, and the duo’s unique approach to blending Korean music and western music.
