South Central PaARTners

Pennsylvania Council of the Arts logo.
Imagine learning geometry by folding and stitching your own book, investigating biology by sketching the plants and wildlife of our local ecosystem in an artists’ nature journal. Imagine writing a puppet theater about the Battle of Gettysburg, exploring fractions by playing different time signatures on a drum you made. Imagine how deep and engaging learning could be, and you’re imagining the power of arts in education.

South Central PaARTners helps bring this quality of learning to our area by placing skilled teaching artists in meaningful, in-depth residencies in K-12 public schools, senior centers, and other community organizations throughout Lancaster, Berks, Lebanon, and northwestern Chester Counties. Our residents hail from a variety of backgrounds and include writers, dancers, theater practitioners, musicians, storytellers, painters, sculptors, book artists, and more.

We work with each artists and host site to tailor residencies to the unique needs of the individuals they serve, integrating the arts with the curriculum of the public schools, or providing other community organizations with a meaningful engagement in the arts. Residencies range from 10-20 days, and our artists are paid a minimum of $200/day.
Why Host a Residency?
Hosting an artist-in-residence gives your students or clients exposure to an art form and a working artist they might not otherwise get, enriching their education and their sense of the world.

Arts in Education Residencies:
  • Support students and educators in meeting Common Core and state standards
  • Teach students collaboration and increase empathy
  • Advance achievement and increase scores on standardized tests
  • Help students develop a sense of community and belonging
  • Increase students’ abilities to problem-solve and think creatively
  • Teach about cultures and experiences that widen students’ perspectives
  • Trigger children’s imagination and activate multiple intelligences
What are the Costs?

The cost of residencies vary by length of the artist’s stay, the artist selected, mileage costs, etc. South Central PaARTners matches the cost of the residencies as follows:
